3 Steps for Producing Sustainable Fashion

When wanting to build a solid foundation for your clothing brand, it’s safe to say that sustainability is a thing you shouldn’t miss out on!

We, at Trial And Error, have been producing Luxury Streetwear Fashion since we entered the market in 2021, and with this article, we are sharing with fashion brand owners what they can do to counteract the environmental impact of the fashion industry as much as possible.

The following 3 steps for producing sustainable fashion are realizable for any fashion brand: Whether you are part of a big fashion label or a smaller one, one person can make a difference, as long as you have faith in your power to change things!

Looking for a Sustainable Manufacturer

Starting with probably one of the hardest tasks when looking at running a clothing brand, finding the right manufacturer. Trust me, every clothing brand has been there, had the same issues, and might still be facing issues finding the right manufacturer, so don’t be afraid of failure when finding the right manufacturer might take longer than expected. Remember, it’s all about building the right foundation to lead a successful business, so the time you invest in research will pay off.
In short, make sure your manufacturer validates for sustainability. A manufacturer isn’t just someone who has your desired fabric in stock and sews clothing together to your liking; they have to purchase the fabric first. Since manufacturers undergo a process of purchasing fabric from fabric suppliers, it’s crucial to communicate about the procurement of their fabric as well. For example, a manufacturer might qualify as a sustainable one due to them being based in your country, but when it comes to their fabrics, a lot of those so-called great local manufacturers aren’t as sustainable as they sometimes appear. Therefore, remember: don’t solely acknowledge your manufacturer by what they tell and show you (certificates, etc.), but do your own research where you evaluate their production process from scratch to finish in a rational way.

Matching Quantity to Demand

Surely you have heard of the law of supply and demand. If there is high demand for your product, you should increase your supply to a point where your customers are satisfied. If there isn’t, you shouldn’t exceed the actual demand because it will backfire. Now, without wanting to go too deep into the topic of which business model you want to follow with your brand, clothing brands should test the waters first, especially if they are just starting. When we published our first product, the Star Stream Washed Black T-Shirt, we agreed to a production quantity that was higher than our demand back then. This was a crucial mistake for us. Why? Because storing clothing for multiple months or years until everything is gone takes up a lot of resources as well (warehouse bills, waste of storage space)! My advice, therefore, is to gain great knowledge of your demand first before you agree on a greater order quantity with your manufacturer than what you are capable of distributing.

Sustainable Packaging for Orders

So now you have a great manufacturer that ticks all boxes for being sustainable. You've done enough research on the demand for your collection, but what’s left? Correctly packing your orders and sending them to your customers in a sustainable way! Most clothing brands use plastic shipping bags, which scream environmentally unfriendly. Ever since we launched Trial And Error we have always used 100% recyclable and biodegradable packaging. We made that decision regardless of the comparatively higher costs and increased work rate for packing orders in their appropriate packaging, and so should you. Not only will your overall product look better, but what’s most important is that our planet will thank you. Actually, did you know that when comparing the production of 1 tonne of corrugated cardboard with plastic, the emissions caused by manufacturing cardboard is 4 to 6 times less? Think beyond the obvious!

Coming to an end, these are my top 3 eco-friendly clothing brand must-do's that the environment will thank you for.

It’s crucial to think about our planet's longevity when doing business, as businesses like us are the gatekeepers to which products are being produced, used, and recommended amongst our clients and the community.
